As you know, Milanese coachbuilder Touring Superleggera will only make eight 8C Competizione-based Alfa Romeo Disco Volantes. We've seen !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (ordered by a wealthy Singaporean enthusiast) at the motor shows and on Top Gear, but now Touring has revealed a green and gold one, and it's gorgeous. I'll just let the pictures speak for themselves.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
No word yet on who ordered that particular car, but Touring will be exhibiting it at the Geneva motor show this month.

They've been bothering me for so long now, haha.

It's a good choice, they're very pretty. Headlights must come a fortune to develop because for some reason even the most exclusive cars use existing ones.

It gets a LOT worse . I can't imagine how much a replacement LED costs.

If you live in Singapore, the car actually is now on display at Lamborghini Singapore.
And for the green car..
Oh crap. That's really pretty!
I love how they paint it gold before applying green paint on it, to make the color richer.

I can only hope the Alfa miata's front end looks this good.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 16:35 |

No, no, no! Not those yellow stripes. The green is fine on its own. No extras please.

it's ok, but it's not an improvement on the 8C. it's terrible how many 8Cs have been ruined for this, and how many more will likely be ruined in the future. There aren't a lot of 8Cs, rich people! stop making it worse!
![]() 03/01/2014 at 16:58 |
|
It's the cost of getting them homologated, apparently – lots of regulations to get through. The cost is prohibitive for low-volume production, unless you're charging 599 money for the car it's going into. The process also takes a long time.
That's the reason Alfa abandoned the 4C concept's headlamps in favour of a bunch of off-the-shelf lamps glued into a cluster. Personally I'm surprised they didn't raid the parts bins of other manufacturers to find a fit.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 16:59 |

if they left it British racing green that would be car porn of epic scale, the gold strip is a little overkill if you ask me.
otherwise i am head over heel in love with the Disco Volante.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 17:02 |
|
The 8C isn't that rare, Alfa made a 1000 of them and Touring is only making 8 Disco Volantes.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 17:03 |

It moved.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 17:04 |

I guess you could order one and ask them to make it black if you wanted. No one knows how much it costs, but probably somewhere around $2 million. Pocket change, really. Oh, and you have to provide the 8C Competizione, of course.

That's the first thing I noticed about this car when I first saw it. It's the only part of it that bothers me.

Beautiful car. Front or mid engine? I'm struggling to understand what the giant box under the hatch is.

I can't be the only one whose jimmies are severely rustled by the exterior.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 17:18 |

Front on yes, but the rear end on the volante is much nicer than the generic 8c which is Ferrari/old vette/BMW z3
![]() 03/01/2014 at 17:20 |
|
Sorry but the rear shot of the 8C with the Models doesn't help your case, lol
The rear on the 8C seems to still flow better than the oddly angular Disco Volante.

![]() 03/01/2014 at 17:24 |

Front engine. No idea what the giant box is. Perhaps the boot was actually usable at first and they went "noooo we can't any of that fancy practicality, this is an Alfa"

Rustled jimmies indicate a state of indifference...not enough to piss you off but enough to fuck with you. Think of it like the douchenozzle roommate who hides the remote or some shit like that.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 17:27 |

Well if you're going to steal another car's headlights, you can do a lot worse than the 599's.

Most tenuous BRM tie-in since the Rover 200?
![]() 03/01/2014 at 17:28 |

I guess a really really dark grey one would work as well, then (Lego movie reference).
![]() 03/01/2014 at 17:32 |

I thought that's what they were. Glad somebody else thinks so.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 17:34 |

I wonder if that was intentionnal. By the way, do you know more about that Rover ? It looks interesting.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 17:34 |

I absolutely love these cars. I didn't think it was even possible to make an 8C even better than it was, but somehow Touring has. Just sex on wheels. I love how not retro-y retro it is... If that makes any sense. And, it is one of the few cars that I like the V8 exhaust note. V8's usually sound like utter garbage (any and all American V8s, AMG V8s, Maserati V8s F-type R V8), but this is glorious.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 17:36 |

I can't wait to see what Touring gets up to next.

They're supposed to be a nod to the original.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 17:55 |

If this had the proper number of pedals there would be a hole in my jeans right now. Stunning car and even better with this paint scheme. And its not like the original 8c was anywhere close to ugly
![]() 03/01/2014 at 17:58 |
|
It's not interesting. It's pretty much just a Rover 200 with orange paint on the front.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rover_200…
Basically, Rover had this idea that 'anything American car companies can do, we can do better', so they decided to out-Malaise you lot.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 18:00 |
|
Just a lazy special edition then ? I was hoping it was some kind of hot hatch. From Rover... Silly me.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 18:01 |
|
I really think the 8C looks better as well. The 8C has such a flowing design, it just looks like a dollop of cream or something, this is very busy by comparison. It looks more interesting , rather than beautiful. Maybe it's more rare, and they may have meticulously made it fancier , but the 8C is about as beautiful a car as you can find.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 18:04 |

About the Rover 200 in general or the BRM edition? It was a limited edition they did in the late '90s, before they did the MG ZR version. Its got the 145bhp version of the 1.8 engine, sportier suspension (don't know how that compares to the ZR's), an LSD and a crazy quilted red leather interior.
I've not driven a BRM, but my first car was a 214; they're nice cars, very underrated.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 18:12 |
|
It was a hot hatch, but it was an expensive limited edition weird one that came out in a golden age of hot-hatches so it was a bit of a flop. They did do a 'regular' hot-hatch version later, the MG ZR, which was a minor success.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 18:14 |

While you cannot deny the exhaust note on a disco volante is a beautiful thing, I find the exterior very blah

I was in love...until I saw dat ass. Do not want.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 18:18 |

Just throw some gold wheels on a '97 M-edition.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 18:19 |

It was some kind of hot hatch. Just not much of one.
This was practically a Rover, though:
And this one was practically a hatch, and definitely hot:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rover_200…
I'm being a tad harsh on the 200/25, because it was a tin can with a pretty good selection of engines. Build quality wasn't as bad as it might have been, and although the handling, interiors, etc weren't anything special, it wasn't a downright terrible car. Thanks to the light weight, at least they were reasonably nippy and economical - commensurately terrible in crashes, though.
Funnily enough, I was just looking at buying a Rover 200 diesel for work purposes. I need something economical, and if it's a diesel, old enough not to have DPF problems sitting in traffic the whole time. They're surprisingly close to more modern cars in fuel economy - >40mpg (imp) on the urban cycle - and so cheap that you can buy an awful lot of diesel with the amount you save buying one. Since sitting in London traffic is the only thing it'll do, I really don't care about anything like handling or crash safety.

I get it!!
(...guess why)
![]() 03/01/2014 at 18:22 |

Please, Car makers, make dark green a factory color on more of your cars.

edit: double post.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 18:29 |

They weren't great at crashes but compared to other mid '90s designs they don't come out any worse; they got a 3-star rating. The handling was good too; maybe not quite up to what Peugeot were putting out at the time but closer than most of the rest got.
They put that engine in the hatch as well as the coupe, by the way, 220 GSI Turbo:
190+bhp was a lot of horsepower for an early '90s hot hatch.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 18:30 |

Like the 8C, under that box is the suspension and the rear mounted transaxle.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 18:36 |

Soiled your pants? I just made a sound I thought only women could make. DAMN that's pretty!
![]() 03/01/2014 at 18:39 |

Wow — that seems to take up a lot more space than normal. It's not as bad as the trunk in a Pontiac Solstice, but it's not the most elegantly packaged thing. It's so big I thought it might be the engine under there.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 18:42 |
|
The paint is nice, and the interior is nice, but the car itself is still ugly as hell. I don't get the love for this thing. Those wheel arches are hideous.

I really don't see the difference. Put a brighter colour on the cluster and put a lexan cover over top and suddenly it looks just like the concept.

![]() 03/01/2014 at 19:38 |

Oh, was the crash rating that good? Maybe my memory's skewed by them selling the 25 in a much tougher market.
I'm sure the handling wasn't bad, because it was a light enough car, but then again, it was a nineties Rover...
Actually, I'd love to have a go in one of the really quick ones. Wonder how many are left. Ah, HML says just 150 coupe turbos on the road. Not too bad compared to other cars of the era.

My dad had a 420 gsi turbo with 240bhp when I was younger.
One of the 3 cars that got me into cars, I cried when they sold it.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 20:11 |

In the gsi turbo there was plenty of understeer on power (understandable) but Rover were always great at turning a dodgy chassis into a fine handler and comfy ride, dad loved it.

The only Rover my dad had when I was a kid was a B-reg 216 which was so rusty that in the end you couldn't open the passenger door or it would have fallen off. I think you win on that front.
![]() 03/01/2014 at 20:44 |

You couldn't open the back left door on the 420, was a odd quirk.
My mum and dad have had over 20 rover/mg/leyland cars over my lifetime (including 3 mg meastros, a mg montego, a mg meastro turbo and mg metro turbo (my favourite) loads of minis and a few rover 200/25 and 400s), only 1 died of rust! and only 1 died due to cooling issues! (even 8 year old self could tell it was overheating, mum wouldn't believe me)
